Trainz 2009 Hardware requirements
Posted: 30th October 2008
With updated graphics capabilities for the 2009 Edition, many people are wondering whether they will need to upgrade their computers. The short answer is that TS2009 will run with the same minimum specs as previous versions.
We have introduced a "Compatibility Mode" which will generally run old routes better than they ran in previous versions of Trainz. This means you can run your old content on your old PC and still get all the advantages from the new features in TS2009.
The longer answer is that TS2009 can support much higher polygon models and higher resolution textures. Once new routes are released that take advantage of these newer models (for example in the upcoming Engineers Edition), some older PCs will begin to struggle. Scene density is also a big factor and it is inevitable that as more and more people get higher spec hardware, they will want to increase the scene density even more. It is possible to reduce the graphics sliders to gain significant performance improvements and of course you can also use Surveyor to delete scenery items to reduce scene density. Ultimately, Trainz is flexible enough that you can make routes that will run smoothly on a 5 year old computer or make a scene so densely populated that it brings the latest and greatest PC to its knees.
